Tony Muhammad
Electric Bass, Upright Bass
Mr. Muhammad started playing bass at the tender age of 13 in Baltimore, Maryland. His first teacher was trumpet player Mack Rucks, of the Center City All-Star Band, who introduced him to jazz. While studying at the Peabody Preparatory of Music, he spent several summers in New York at the Skidmore Jazz Institute, where he studied with the great jazz bassist/pianist Harvey Swartz, bassist Rufus Reid, and Milt Hinton, bassist for such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Cab Calloway.
After moving to San Diego in 1999, he studied music at Southwestern College and San Diego State.
Milt Hinton is the reason Tony is teaching today. Milt taught him that the only way you can prove that you know something is to teach someone who can then explain it completely. Tony still uses that approach today, after more than 13 years at La Jolla Music.
Tony has written two books on bass theory, BASS-ICK Theory, and BASS-ICK Theory volume 02. His books have received praise from the world’s most renowned bass players, and have 5 star ratings. Both books are available from many online retailers including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books Wholesale, and many others.
